 When a jockey is riding a horse, he doesn’t always whip him but he’ll show him the whip to get him motivated to give more.

The jockey holds the whip in his dominant hand.  If the jockey is left handed, and the horse is blind in the left eye, the horse isn’t going to see the whip.

Or you could own the horse like a rented mule. Either way works.
