I came in 2nd at mirage once like 45 players small tourney. Actually had opponent all in and he caught me with AJ vs my 44 so I was fav to do what you described.
HOWEVER..Like 3rd hand I doubled up in tourney MY AA vs KK
so i could sit back and wait for quite some time.
Bad beats are part of poker, they are a HUGE PART OF WHY it is popular.
An above average amateur like me can beat a superior player, like a small time pro, or even a big time pro if cards break right.
Also a guy new to the game and weak can kick my butt ( I have been playing 20 years ) if the cards play right.

$100 50k guarenteed Iam in 55th place out of 55 players remaing with the button 99 push all in BB has AA I catch a 9 on the river.
Same tourney were down to 7 players Iam second in chips chip leader first to act pushes all in I have AA this time I call. He flips 99 and catches a 9 on the river to knock me out. First place was over 13k instead I got just under 2.
Would have had 600,000 of the 1 million chips in play and a huge chip lead.
It doesn't bother me because I should have been out in 55th place anyways. Win some you lose some just sucks when your so close to victory though.

Yeah, its impossible to win any decent sized tournament without a lucky draw or 2. Unless you double, quadruple up right away, most tournaments you are all in and covered at least once as the non-favorite.
