last night. 120 person tourney at my buddies place. top 10 get paid out. 12 are left, im in like 4th place. i get dealt AA. preflop the guy in 3rd place (has me covered) makes a big raise. another kid who is in like 9th place reraises all in. i call his reraise, and then the first raiser raises me all in. so heres my situation:
12 people left
been playing for 7 hours
if i lose this hand, i dont get any cash
if i dont, i can practically check/fold the whole time and assure myself a payout
now being chip leader would be nice, but nothing in the world would be worse than playing for 7 hours and finishing one out of the money. 2 callers means that there is a chance one will catch a straight or maybe trips. so i do the unthinkable....i fold and let them duke it out.
guy in 3rd place has kk
all in guy has AQ of spades
flop: Ks 3d 6s
turn: Jh
river: Js
guy catches his flush but loses to the kings full
id have had the 3rd best hand.
ended up finishing 5th and winning 400 bucks.
anyone ever do that before? it was probably a bad move, but i really really did not want to be the last guy out of the tourney w/o winning anything

thanks man, as you can all tell from my threads, i am a very cautions player. if i am not positive i have the best hand, i will lay my cards down. the funny thing is, i would have played vs one caller, but not 2

obviously, even if you are positive you have the best hand, you will still lay your cards down...
the only time i would make this play is in some sort of qualifying
tourny where let's say the top 10 all receive the same prize, such as a
buy-in to a larger tournament..
you're at least 70% to win in this spot and i'm assuming (depending on
the size of the small stack) you're getting nearly 2 to 1 odds.. even
if his stack was incredibly small, you're getting at least even odds
when you are a big favorite..
in this case, you got lucky that you folded because you would have
ended up on the bubble.. but 70% of the time, you'd be kicking yourself
for making this play and not doubling up through a bigger stack

when I play those kinds of tournaments, I always try to aim for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in order to make it worth your time. So when you have an excellent opportunity to put yourself in that kind of position, you have to take it. I would've done the same.

it worked out in the end, but it is a terrible play......and like dewby said, the ONLY time you can ever consider doing this is if you are trying to coast in some satellite or similar qualifying tournament.
playing like this will get you nothing in the long run......

Agreed. I know it's hard when the situation comes up like this one, but the only way to win tourneys of this size is to have the stones to make correct moves even if it puts you in an all-in position (even though in your situation the odds were GREATLY in your favor). I'm glad to see that it worked out to your advantage, but I'm never laying down the nuts preflop. I believe in the odds.

greyhound, thank you for the compliment but its not like i knew it was the losing hand. i only laid it down because my motto is that if i play poker for 7 hours, i better get a fucking profit. once i was in the money i woulda called, but i did not want to go home broke

tease-
He STATED that "nothing would be worse then playing for 7 hours and not getting in the money."
If that is the way he felt, then he made the right play. Now you can argue whether his goal should be to get in the money or to win the whole thing. But that's a different argument.

I don't think it was a great lay down at all. In the end it worked out for you, but what if the flop missed them both and the guy missed his flush. Then everyone would be saying that was a horrible play. In the end it worked for you, but you never lay that down

Bad play. If you weren't going to play it then why did you already call a reraise. You didn't give the chipstacks but from what you said you had to have been more than priced in big time, plus you know you are way ahead. So what if a K spiked on the flop. Ridiculous fold. Can't play scared.

I understand why you laid it down, you were trying to finish in the money after seven hours, but I could NEVER lay down AA pre-flop. It worked out for you here but folding AA preflop because someone by catch a straight or make trips is playing scared. Based on your other posts I am very surprised you folded that hand.

Whatever you're reasoning, YOU LAID DOWN A LOSING HAND.
I say GREAT CALL. There were two other guys betting big and you thought they might catch something.
You made a great lay down. That's what the great players do.
I do not think it was a great lay down. It worked out for him in this hand but not a great play. There is always a chance someone will catch something but that's poker. You want to get your money in with the best hand and you do not want to play scared poker.

simply awfuyl
would you be posting this if aa would have held up? ofcourse not
if this was a satelite where the top 10 paid out the same Its a good fold
But you gotta play to win in these things- you do much better in the long run
