live table boredom - advice

As I posted earlier, I'm realatively new player (actually, I'm an old online player trying to revitalize his skills live).  And, it's been working fairly well.  I've been reading some books and playing alot, winning a little.
 
Last night, I decided to go up to the Red Rock and practice a little on the 1/2 NL sit and go tables.  I got $100 in chips and played for 3+ hours.  But gentlemen, being new to live poker, I have to confess, I get seriously bored. 
 
Playing online, no matter if you'll admit it or not, things are kind of more relaxed...you're in your own home, football game in the background, pets at your feet, etc.  You can go to the kitchen, sit out and watch tv for a while, etc.  Playing live, there is much going on, and you have to pay much closer attention to the game, and every little thing around you, including 8 other guys reads and playing strategies.  Which is great, but sometimes to me this gets excruciatingly boring, especially on the lower limit tables. 
 
So, in turn, I start drinking after a while, my play starts to falter, etc.  I'm not confident enough to move up to a higher limit table just yet. 
 
Any advice?

This poker forum on covers is a boring as the game I was in last night.  I should move this to the General Discussion.  Maybe a mod will see this and do so?  Thanks.

Live is boring at times given you only play 25 hands per hour and junk most of your hands in HE. Just goes with the territory. That's why I like a bit of conversation at the table to lighten the mood, particularly at 1/2 when the play is alot more relaxed. Doesn't always happen if the players are wearing sunglasses/Ipods/getting massages though.

exactly MWC ifyou want some real good poker disscusion go to pocketfives or 2+2 where you can actually post HH and discuss stategy hands , bad beats , and so forth
 
live poker is somuch slower its crazy .i actually have prolly played more hands than some live only pros because online you play so so much nore , but they are 2 different kind of birds

I find the 1-2 $100 buyin is the worst game to be in as the action is slow and the pots don't get big enough.  I prefer the 5-5 nl with buyins from 200min-500max.   I prefer tables that have low preflop raises and plenty of action after the flop. 
 
 
MWC try talking to the guy next or across from you or go when a game is on this way you can watch the game while you play.  Every poker room Ive been to has tv's located everywhere.

Thanks for the advice pezeveng.  I do chat it up with people.  That makes it a bit more fun.  I've actually started playing a little more higher stakes limit poker, that way you can play longer (I'm still workin on my skills), but at the same time you can actually win some money without risking everything.

I've been playing pretty solid the last month or so, almost every night.  I've come to a conclussion.  In order to become a pro, you have to be really good with a very large bankroll and unlimited time on your hands.  Me, I still have a full time job.  So my philosophy is this:  if I can't make more money per hour playing poker than I can at my regular job (I have a decent job), then poker isn't going to be my game.

Actually, I should rephrase that.  If I could consistently make as much money as I do at my regular job, then I'd quit my job and start playing full time.  Make the same money playing poker....sure thing.

Problem is that regardless of how good a poker player you are, you will have some long losing streaks.  And having steady income from work to pay the bills reduces your stress level immensely. 
 
And I have been playing poker for a long time now, and absolutely agree that higher stakes poker makes for a much more interesting, albeit tougher, game to make a profit in the long run.  But this also greatly increases stress and anxiety when you are running bad.
 
Good luck with your game, but lower stakes poker is much less stressful financially, but extremely boring at the same time if you are not doing something on the side to kill time.

thanks for the advice roz.... 

I'm not going to be quiting my real job anytime soon.  In the mean time, if I can make some decent extra money on the side (ie; more than I make at my 9-5) then I interested.  I'm not going to sit at a poker table for 5 hrs on a Saturday afternoon and walk away with $100, I've got better things to do.
