Huck Seed is the only player to cash in all five NBC National
Heads-Up Championships. Now he's got a title to his credit, too, after
defeating Vanessa Rousso in the best-of-three finals Sunday at Caesar's
Palace in Las Vegas.
Seed, a four-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner, earned
$500,000 for the win after defeating six opponents over the past three
days.
Seed started Sunday's action by
knocking off David Oppenheim in the quarterfinals after his pocket 8s
held up against Oppenheim's A-Q. He then defeated Sam Farha in a
hard-fought semifinal match that lasted about two-and-a-half hours.
Seed now has a lifetime record of 18-4 at the NCAA tournament-style
event and joins Phil Hellmuth and Chris Ferguson as past WSOP main
event winners who've won it.
While Seed is a very deserving champion, it's a little disappointing
to see Rousso's Cinderella run through the tournament end in defeat.
There's no question Rousso had the toughest road to the finals. In
the first round, she faced Doyle Brunson. Next was Phil Ivey. And then
2007 heads-up champion Paul Wasicka.
Daniel Negreanu awaited in the quarterfinals Sunday and she
dispatched of him before knocking off Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, who
has about $5 million in live tournament earnings, including World Poker
Tour and European Poker Tour titles.
Earlier, Grospellier had eliminated Phil Hellmuth on the fifth hand
of their quarterfinal match when his pocket aces held up against
Hellmuth's pocket queens after all the money got in the middle before
the flop.
For her second-place finish, Rousso earned $250,000 and now has more
than $1 million in live tournament earnings. And the timing couldn't
have been better for Rousso's newest sponsor, GoDaddy.com, which also
happened to be sponsoring the event.
NBC will kick off six straight weeks of television coverage at noon April 12.
