Here's the situation: I'm at a 2/5 table, up about $1300. Lost a set to a straight on the river and AA to QQ almost back to back, back down to about $350. This joker in front of me has been bullying and raising all night with crap, and i'm a tilting a little (i know, i should have got up...). I have As 6s. He raises to $40 preflop, i call. Flop comes 6d 9d 9s. He bets $40, i raise to $80, he shoves in, about $400 total. Now obviously im not going to call...BUT...i looked at him, said "i'm not folding", and turned my cards face up to see his reaction (illegal in some casino's ??? but apparently not this one). He thought i said i folded and immediately flips his cards over, showing Ad 4d, and starts his smack talk. I am sitting right next to the dealer who heard me say i'm not folding, he calls the pit boss over, finally we get it all straightened out. Since my hand is still live, i can call if i want, even though all cards are exposed. Do i call?

Tough, tough call with his diamond draw......I would have put him on a 9 or high pocket pair in that situation (before seeing the cards)......the odds, however, are in your favor -- maybe 55% or so.....it would be a gamble, but I would probably lay it down.
What did you do?

well i did and of course he caught a diamond and sent me to the rail. i was pretty sure i made the right call but i just hate it when losing makes you start second-guessing yourself.

I can see not calling if you were in a tournament situation not wanting to gamble for your tournament life, but this is different. You gotta play the numbers when you're playing $$ games. You had the best of it....call.

the reason i flipped my cards is because this guy was a real emotional player. i just wanted to see his reaction and maybe get a tell. i mean, after i re-raised he basically beat me into the pot with his all-in, which to me either meant he was protecting his nine from the flush draw or he had crap-ola, and i wanted to know whick it was.

Don't agree that this is an automatic call (if that is what you are saying). But everyone has their own strategy. Personally, I think both calling and folding are acceptable options in a NL game. If you know you can beat the table, why gamble?

When youre 67% not to lose the hand it is an automatic call. I mean, youre 70-30 AK vs Aq so if you had AK to his AQ are you gonna fold because you feel you can "beat the table". Folding when you know youre the fave, a big fave even, is what scared and shitty players do. Dont even listen to anyone entertaining thoughts of folding, call every time here and you will be a big winner in the long run

You mean every time that you get to see the other persons cards after the flop and before you make an all-in call? Happens all the fukkin time........good grief.
This is a very isolated circumstance and if I were in that situation knowing that I could bust the table in the long run, I wouldn't make the call b/c I feel my odds are better at winning in the long run than gambling for all my chips on a 67% chance of winning the hand.
Do you watch a lot of poker on TV, because they don't give you the percentages when you play live.

If I'm reading right you had to put in another $320 to collect the $400 plus $200 pot. $320 to win $600. And you're the favorite to win the hand. Who the hell wouldn't take nearly 2:1 odds as a favorite? If you have to ask the question you probably shouldn't be playing.

your exact figures were: you were 58%, opponent 33%, and a split pot 9%
jbbigk, I am confused as to your stack size at the beginning of the hand. Were you still up 350 or was your stack size 350? Assuming your stack was 350, you were faced with investing 230 more into a 600 pot, 2.6 to 1 on your money.
Also, I assume by the way you titled this post that your opponent caught a diamond on 4th or 5th street?

Gambling is 10-10 v. A-K for your tournament life.
This guy is 65% or so to win the hand. That's pretty nice considering you're getting 2:1 BACK on that risk.
You must play with some real chumps because I'd push you around and pretty much fold whenver you pushed back. If you're only making calls as an 80%+ favorite, I have no idea how you ever get any action when you do play a hand.

Avoid the sharks and feed on the donkeys -- because they are everywhere. I'll admit it that my bottom line may improve if I played a little less tight, but I play my game and stick to it and it has done me very, very well.
It is so difficult to properly examine how to play hands in a forum like this -- there is so much more to it than simply the cards you are holding. You have to play the table as much as the cards (obviously). Once I detected that you pegged me for a tight player, I'd start bluffing you out of pots. Such a great game.
