The whole mess is due to excess debt/leverage and inflation suppression. Farmers are carrying so much debt that a small decrease in demand destroys many and to maximize their land/opportunity they have to leverage and borrow so they can try and make a living.
The government is bent on supporting farmers and has been for decades partially because if we lose the ability to farm for our population and rely on other sources we become enslaved and vulnerable. I'd imagine fair value for farming goods produced is probably 100-200% higher in costs than exist now. If we want farmers to not leverage and rely on the government to survive that burden would mean much higher costs for food and much higher inflation.
