He’s banking on Leonard Leo’s bribes to Clarence, Sammy, Brett and Amy to help bail him out on a petition for cert with the SCOTUS. He usually doesn’t interfere with his appellate attorneys. They will argue that a state court has no jurisdiction over a federal question (the underlying election fraud). 

One wild card touches on one of your valid points - his trial counsel didn’t CYA very well with preserving issues and objections. Probably because he was right there, telling them what to do. If he had let the lawyers lawyer, he coulda defeated the weakest of the three cases against him.

He’s already made so many damaging public admissions on that (documents) case the only hope is for winning the election, or hoping for prosecutorial error.
