Nature1970 is right. Abortion doesn't prevent pregnancy but does prevent birth. Therefore it is "birth control" by definition, although we don't typically think of it in those terms, it is nonetheless.

There are much larger issues at stake.
1 right to privacy .
One what happens with a patient and their doctor is no different than attorney client privilege in case of medical procedure it stands with the hippa law...
Do we re write them .
2 right to choose what happens with. Ones body.
As some one inferred no names just posts closr your legs deals in another realm right to privacy within ones home and bedroom do we throw out castle laws here?
3 if the government can intrude in these matters and it becomes policy to regulate reproductive health. Then the government with a different agenda can force abortions in certain situations. And we could become as china with fixed population goals agenda...
Where does all this new regulation come from who enforces them how is this conduct comes from and where doez it lead.... Back to coat hangers in botched experiments in some basement?.?.?

I think the supreme court messed this up badly, the federal government has to step in and take a position when states cannot properly take proper action and make rational, broad decisions which are best for most of the population. Too many states are religiously controlled and ultra conservative and that means people who have rights to abortions cannot do so and that is where the federal government has to step in and make a broad proclamation.
People want to force their religious and personal beliefs on others rather than allowing liberties and choice while maintaining their personal beliefs in the home and with their family.
This goes to show the biases which currently exist on the supreme court and it is not how the court is meant to function. Deflecting to the states when the states have shown in the past and are showing now as incapable of protecting rights is the WRONG thing to do.

Religion is at the heart of anti-abortion laws and government should have no business requiring citizens to comply with the religious beliefs of those in power. Since abortion is so controversial, it is best decided as a private matter between women and doctors. Besides, religions disagree on when life begins. Some religions say it's at conception. Another say life begins with the first breath after birth. Under the constitution, government should be protected from religion just as religion should be protected from government.

Perfectly summarized. The large majority of Americans, in poll after poll, have confirmed they wanted Roe left in place as the law of the land. In effect, the ultra-conservative majority on SCOTUS has forced their beliefs against the majority of Americans.
As you said, this is not how the courts are meant to function. Likewise, states are in a position to do the same thing with conservative majorities, despite the will of their own constituents opposing their actions.
