Even if there was systemic racism in this country (which there is not IMHO), the defunding talk is such a barbaric response to the police departments . If there's a problem w the department, you fix the culture and you weed out the individuals that are bad apples.
Defunding the departments only emboldens criminals, and emboldens the law abiding citizens to further exercise their 2nd amendment rights..

OK, you defund a police department. Park the cars, check in the equipment, open the cells, shutoff the computers and lights and "last one out please lock the door." Yeah, that makes perfect sense, or did someone think the cops will stick around and buy their own gas and protect the public as volunteers?
OK, that's a little overboard. Obviously you can't go THAT far. But what will reducing funding do? All forms of enforcement will suffer; good, bad, or indifferent. Black Lives will matter less, not more, because we will reduce personnel, patrolling and investigations. Instead of one black man shot by a white cop and ten black men shot by ten black men Chicago will see zero white cop/black man shootings and fifteen black man/black man shootings. Maybe a mathematician can work out the net gain on that, it is beyond me. Perhaps equality is better than systemic racism? Leave that to the philosophers.
What I think happens is you overhaul police departments, but I can not create an equation that comes out less funding = better law enforcement. Some of these politically correct concepts just continue to prove to me how stupid I really am.
In the heyday of the Republic, Rome had no police department of any kind. Murder and major crime went unstopped, unresolved and basically unpunished, and it was "every man for himself" (bigshots, including politicians, had gangs). Although weapons were technically illegal only a fool went without one (or more). So, is that the answer? Defund the police department and use the excess tax money to buy every man, woman and child their choice of an Uzi or AR15?
Ever hear of anarchy?
Now and then even a BLIND squirrel can find an acorn

There is a frightening thought in my head(as well as others) that maybe there is a group of people in higher places who would just rather have the poor/minority destroy themselves. Unfortunately, there most definitely is a large part of people in this country who would agree. That's just fact, not opinion.
It's an elephant in a room for sure.
The reality of the living conditions, the poverty, the broken family structure, the drugs and guns on the street, the prevalence of gangs, prostitution, lack of education, history of police brutality is an ENORMOUS problem in our country. It's a problem that has existed for so long without much(if any) improvement at all.
In my estimation, it has to be the most difficult endeavour(in our country) to turn these communities around.
Is California giving up on it's people? It doesn't make sense to me either. I agree with the previous posts. So what's going on? I hope the situation is far from that frightening thought in my head.

Defunding police doesn't necessarily mean disbanding police departments. In 2017 study, New York found less police lead to less crime. Cities determine whether some money is better spend on community services that improve public safety. That is, schools, hospitals, housing and food. Alternatives include social services for mental health, domestic violence, drug addiction and homelessness. In some situations, first responder should be a social worker instead of a police officer.

Defunding of police may be one of the most ignorant moves of all time. The police should be praised and not burnt down because on bad cop did something. In Chicago, my home city, at least 20 are shot and killed every weekend, 81 shot last weekend. What would those numbers be with no/minimal police? 100+ shot? 50+ dead?

LOL The presumption .. The police encourage crime by their presence or the police create crime? NO police lead to ALL crime...

Defunding is the first step.. In fact the Minneapolis City Council are now seeking to take the next step and getting rid of the police department — permanently disband the MPD. They want to replace the MPD with a community-oriented, non-violent public safety and outreach Program..That should work. rotflmao
thirdperson where do you come up with this crap ? Keep it coming it's gold ..

I'd love to see one story, just one story, on how many whiteys there are right on the front line of these protests. People risking their safety. People risking their children's safety to be a part of history. The media doesn't like to run stories that point to racial unity or compassionate white people. There are exponentially more compassionate bleeding heart whites on the front lines of these protest than there are racist whites in the entire country but the media refuses to tell their story because, as you said, it doesn't fit their narrative. I don't condone rioting, looting, and violence but I appreciate that in this country, people of all races can still stand together. I wish the media acknowledged this.
TIME TO BRING BACK THE OBAMA CAGES!

Lori Lightfoot lives in Logan Square with her girlfriend. On Wrightwood Ave between Central Park and Kimball to be more precise. I know business owners in the area and a few people in the neighborhood. Get this, every night she has 2 squad cars parked out front, and one in the back alley. ALL NIGHT LONG. And now she's talking about defunding the police?
C'mon man! What is she so scared of? Wtf...I can't believe she f*ckin said that "police contracts are a significant part of the problem"
I talked with Stu about the all ready young and inexperienced police force in Chicago. Is cutting their pay going to get better recruitment through the door?
Good f*ckin luck with Barney Fife and Paul Blart guarding your precious property.
