After months of high-profile hemming and hawing by potential 2012 Republican hopefuls, one man is taking action.... Fred Karger
Fred Karger, a Republican and the nation's first openly-gay, major-party presidential candidate, is now the first to officially throw his hat in the ring for the chance to run against President Obama.
Karger, who has worked on Republican political campaigns for more than three decades, including Reagan-Bush in '84, plans to drop off his filing papers in person to the Federal Election Commission today.
He believes this move is a good sign for equality in America. "I compare it to a wedding. I've sat through dozens and dozens of weddings knowing I could never be the groom I always wanted to be," Karger says. "Now that has changed. And now with the change in public opinion and acceptance, I can run for president."
Karger doubts he'll do well in conservative Republican circles, but he is quick to point out that early-primary and caucus states Iowa and New Hampshire have growing numbers of independent voters, which are his target. But he says he's heard surprising enthusiasm from some Republicans at town hall meetings who appreciate his moderate social views, "statements like, 'Finally, a Republican I can support.'"..."Finally,a Republican I can get behind"

I think that Newt should save his money. First, he is too old, he looks his age. Too many of us older folks remember what a classless jerk he was to his dying wife. I appreciate some of his writings but he will never be President, this country makes it a beauty contest in too many ways and he is far from beautiful from any angle. IMO.

would you vote for him in the republican primaries knowing the logical choices? newt, paul, palin etc
No ..he's a GRINO..........and a self-identified Independant Republican and not affiliate with the National R-Party.
Never held political office, supports immigrating reforn, opposes Obama’s troop expansion in Afghanistan,is not for giving tax relief to what he calls the rich (says making 250k is rich ) and is staunchly pro-choice....
Offers vague comments about being an optimistic figure in the White House who would encourage consumers to get out and spend money again. He would like to cut down on government bureaucracy, but is unable to name anything specific. “This issue area is newer to me,”he say's ............
He's really not serious about running for President ..He said he only hopes his candidacy can help other generations of LGBT individuals feel comfortable with their identity.
Born and raised in a suburb of Chicago, Ill., Glencoe ...ironically Glencoe is famous for being the "Queen of Suburbs"..
With that platform raising money will be the largest hurdle to overcome for a Karger campaign to gain any traction....unless he switchs partys and runs as a progressive Democrat ...
He does have a grassroots accomplishment though ... In 2006, Karger founded Save the Boom!!! a grassroots campaign to save the oldest gay bar in the Western US, the landmark Boom Boom Room and Coast Inn in Laguna Beach, CA. ..........

I would have to say ...since there is only one declared GOP candidate at this time ...it would have to be Fred........
Although unlike some Republicans at town hall meetings who appreciate his moderate social views -as stated in the OR article -and make statements like, 'Finally, a Republican I can support.'"..."Finally,a Republican I can get behind" ..
I can not support Fred ...nor would I want to get behind him or vice-versa ...

I think what is interesting is that people will talk about anti-obama all the time saying that he should be a one term president but then do not give a logical alternative to get behind...
