I'd like to see legislation in this area rather than the AG acting alone as I think there would be as broader impact.

Holder say's it will make our expenditures smarter and more productive,that laws like these could save the United States billions of dollars.

..or we could hold them to finish out their sentences ....by sending  them to a tent city jail out West,, using military surplus tents and feeding them two $0.30 meals a day ..

Give him credit for what?  Acting unilaterally and circumventing the law??

yes, sort of.  it's not unilateral as members of congress on both sides have mentioned this needs to be done.  but they all deserve credit for actually acting conservatively and stop with this minimum mandatory nonsense wasting time, money and resources by putting people in prison for minimum time periods for nonviolent drug offenders.

congress "mentioning" it needs to be done means nothing legally.  his actions are still unilateral.

i didn't want to give holder all of the credit but technically, it would have to be unilaterally because the article talks about how the US attorney's office is chaging the way it is prosecuting cases and holder is the head person in charge of that.  congress has no authority at all over how federal cases are charged and prosecuted.

I hate the man, and think that he should spend the rest of his life in jail for his multiple abuses, most notably hiding behind Obama's executive privilege in the Fast and Furious debacle. 

I hate how he openly planned to "brainwash" children against the 2nd amendment. 

That being said, this is a good step in winding down the war on drugs that has been a losing proposition for the American taxpayers, and put a lot of young kids in jail for crimes that equate to misdemeanors.  I commend Eric Holder for doing something correct in his miserable life. 

 

And you better believe if most of those kids were white, he would make no such effort to change the laws.

yes, the idea of eliminating these minimum madatory sentences is not holder's unilaterally.  several members of congress, D and R, have discussed this as well as holder so this is not holder's idea alone.

however, as far as action goes, it is holder's job to tell federal prosecutors whether to enforce the minimum mandatories and how to charge cases so that they may not apply.  no one else can do that (except obama if he wanted to assert his authority over holder).

however, congress can do things that holder can't such as changing the laws that create the minimum mandatory sentences in the first place. 

yeah, holder is going to get right on this.
