Just watching the ever changing job description of police officers. We now expect a clinical social worker with a gun on scene every time a police officer interacts with the public.
A cop with a high school diploma becomes a 4 year degree holder of psychology sociology and criminology from a 20 week training program at a state run police academy.
That is one he'll of an academic program...
We need to grasp reality our military was trained to kill people and break things. Our cops are suppose to protect the public , fire fighters fight fires , is this so hard to grasp.... we need to expect a high school diploma holder with a 20 week certificate to perform as a highschooler with a 20 week certificate program in law enforcement.
Not as a clinical social worker with 5 year masters and 5 years of field work.

Maybe we need to start looking for cops with more than a high school diploma. Maybe there needs to be more training than a 20 week course. Maybe we need more stringent evaluations. Maybe we just need cops with empathy and common sense. They don't have to be social workers. Just know how to deal with society. We have a generation of scared little boys. Boys that are afraid to fight. Who grew up in an internet age making their personal communication skills stunted. Then we give them guns, tell them every potential perp wants to kill them, then turn them lose on the world. We need to address the recruitment process, the vetting and the training. There are millions of cops doing it right every day, so don't tell me it's not possible. And it is a two way street. We also need to retrain ourselves, including in the black community.

But let's face it we dont produce enough citizens who can be vetted to secret service standards.
And reality check if we did we have alot more in law enforcement with zero tolerance for any misconduct.
You want empathy say for an addict. Then that's achieved from experience in addiction.
A drug charge and you can not be a cop.
But recovered an effective counselor in drug addiction strategies to guide others to recovery.
Cops face real people in at times the worst possible state of mind, they are supposed to be able to apprehend potential concerns in public safety effectively with minimal damage to the suspect themselves or the general public and that is a full time direct task,
They should not be d.a. therapists emt, and negotiator trial fact finders or jurists the task given is demanding enough for any person.

Ok. All that can be done.

That's not how empathy necessarily works. I empathize with the the homeless and hungry yet I have never been so myself.

They are doing it everyday and have been for years. The majority of cops are doing it the right way. Cops now days aren't facing worse criminals than they were in the 80s and early 90s. It's the cops that have gotten worse, not the criminals. Imagine if we made excuses like this for any other profession. "You want firemen to fight fires?" We need to hold police to higher standards. Make no mistake, I don't think we have a police problem. It is a very stressful and difficult position and most rise to the challenge daily but there is a problem with the vetting a training of police. Far too many bad nuts make it into the bag.

Not that this is directly on point but the fact that we expect police to deal w mental health situations is criminal in and of itself. We need to come up w a better way of addressing mental health homeless issues etc rather than sweeping it under the rug .
