McCarthy may be on the verge of becoming the next House speaker Friday evening, after he managed to flip 15 votes in his favor following days of failed attempts to secure the gavel -- though for now he is still short of the support he needs to win.
After efforts to secure a deal with holdouts gained momentum, McCarthy is now projecting confidence that he will be able to lock up the votes to be elected speaker Friday night. The House is expected to move to a new round of voting shortly.
"When we come back tonight, we'll have the votes to get this done once and for all. It just reminds me of what my father always told me, it's not about how you start, it's about how you finish," McCarthy told reporters.
