In the end, this war most likely gets settled with Russians keeping Crimeabut giving back all other Ukrainian territory......and then the big slap in the face --> Russia likely will not have to directly pay reparations for the BILLIONS in damages they have caused on Ukrainian soil.
That's very unfair, and there will be justified outrage by Ukraine and much of the West, but I believe Putin will steadfastly refuse any reparations or else the assault continues. It will be his ultimatium. Effectively Putin has nothing to lose other than political condemnations and what amounts to little more than political sanctions and a few financial loses by oligarchs close to Putin.

He might lose crimera but gain the aeperstist backed dontekuh province.
As for reparations Putin is I'm serious trouble with his own floundering economy. He pushed his bluff to the river and now cards up his gas and oil can't be sold at market only discounted to cost. His weopon systems are proven junk.
His military couldn't take on a bunch of peasant wheat farmers . His relationship with china is now strained. And he too is facing a very cold winter in Moscow.
The obliques have lost alot of property yachts ,accounts, investments . This all goes to Ukraine to rebuild....

Yeah Russia is far worse off now than they were before they attacked Ukraine,

The civil war in dontesk province has wahed for nearly a decade. The seperatists there the majority of the population want to be apart of Russia proper. They never backed the west.
Trying to hold that region against the general population is unsustainable. Eastern Ukraine aligns with Moscow and Belarus why the front hasn't moved in months. It will be fought to a line but all wars or at this point military engagement is settled with dialogue not weapons.
If we truly care about Ukraine then we should proceed to a cease fire and peace treaty extending the conflict only hurts the Ukrainian civilian population.
