Yes, there used to be lots of liberal Republicans, including the party's founding father Abraham Lincoln (AL) who certainly advanced civil rights. AL signed a law setting aside the Mariposa Grove and Yosemite Valley as protected lands in 1864. Teddy Roosevelt (TR) busted more trusts than Clinton, Obama and Biden combined. As president, Roosevelt created five national parks, 18 national monuments, 51 bird sanctuaries, began the National Wildlife Refuge system and set aside more than 100 million acres for national forests.
Senator Edward Brooke (MA) was a liberal and the first GOP Senator to call for Nixon's resignation. Howard Dean, HRC, Leon Panetta and John Lindsay were liberal enough to leave the GOP and become Democrats.
Don't forget the LONG list of 99 racist Democrats that signed the Southen Manifesto - only 2 Republicans did. Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms, David Duke and Tom Metzger were all at one time Democrats.
Of course the most important fact of Thurmond, Helms, Duke and Metzger was not their party label; it was their vile bigotry. They were all extreme conservative racists who repeatedly vilified liberals in public speech clips that personally I saw on TV news and talk shows.
It didn't matter if they were Republicans, Democrats or Dixiecrats; they were the same monsters no matter what political party they stained.
