Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), the chair of the Republican conference and third-ranking GOP House member, said Tuesday she will back impeachment: “There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution,” Cheney said in a statement
Rep. John Katko (R-N.Y.) became the first Republican to publicly back impeachment on Tuesday, according to a statement the congressman relayed to Syracuse, New York-based Post-Standard.
Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), a vocal opponent of Trump’s efforts to overturn the election, alleged in a statement that the president “broke his oath of office and incited this insurrection,” asking, “if these actions… are not worthy of impeachment, then what is an impeachable offense?”
Other Republicans who could be in favor of impeachment include Rep. Peter Meijer (R-Mich.), who said Tuesday he’s “strongly considering” supporting the measure, and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.), according to Politico
Seems a push to remove Trump by impeachment is pending if Trump impeachment charge is delayed until thw new Senate convenes. Then no chance of pardon is on the table.
The bottom line is that Leader McConnell has the ability to call us back into session," added Schumer. "And we can then move to convict Donald Trump in the impeachment trial and try him. And that's what we hope McConnell will do."
McConnell's office did not comment on Schumer's demand. If McConnell does not agree, Schumer and the incoming Biden team are preparing to split the Senate's days for an impeachment trial: Working to confirm Biden's Cabinet and pass legislation in the morning, and conducting the trial beginning at 1 p.m. ET each day, as the Constitution requires, in the opening days of Biden's presidency.
