I asked a few months ago for someone to tell me what rights white people have that black people do not. I think the one answer I got was they wouldn't be allowed in a country club. So in some states and recently in the state of North Carolina, they deemed requiring an ID to vote was racist. So my question is, why is it racist to require someone to show who they are to vote. I really hope I get better answers than before.

We have had voter ID threads and discussions before.
i personally am not sure if it's actually racist. Some people will argue how we need voter ID and make reasons why. Some people will argue we don't need voter ID give their reasons why not.

I glanced before making it just in case it had been discussed recently. In almost all of the discussions I hear against it, is it's racist. The closing of DMV's I can see. In cities though more people ride the bus black or white. But it's not like DMV's are off limits to black Americans of African decent. I appreciate the link, maybe someone can point to another reason why it's racist.

if you think the NC law was considered racist just because of the voter ID issue, you should read the legal opinion (one of the more scathing you'll ever read) or at least some articles about it. that law went way beyond the voter id issue. essentially, the state saw the various ways minorities liked to vote and tried to limit or eliminate those methods specifically.

I always thought there wasnt such a big deal to require an id to vote until I realize a lot of people supporting the law aren't interested in the integrity of an election but rather to discourage certain segment of popluation in voting. Therefore, I switch my position and the law does more harm than good..*

I always thought it isnt unreasonable to require an id to vote until i realize a lot of people supporting the law arent really interestec in the integrity of an election, but rather to discourage a certain segment of the popluation in voting. As a result, I switch my position and I believe the law does more harm than good. I believe some might consider racist just because the targeted segment is dispoportionally in minorities.

In lawsuits by justice department against States, courts have struck down voter id laws that discriminate against minorities. Voter fraud is almost non-existent but millions of eligible voters lack proper id. So the harms far outweigh any tiny benefit according to one judge.

ok so I still don't see an answer. Why is it racist to require someone to pull out something that proves who they are. All I see is why you changed or what you though the law meant or what you are hearing CNN say. To not require an ID opens far more of an opportunity for voter fraud.

Just another ridiculous liberal argument. I felt so proud of HRC at debate #2 or #3 where she spoke of helping people register to vote... Wow, that's so impressive.... Man, I just can't come up with anything comparable to that. If your that uneducated you can't do that on your own and u need her to help u shouldn't be voting. And while we're at it, if your on government entitlement programs u should lose your right to vote until off it.

it's not really possible to answer your initial question because you refer to the NC law and if you think the problem with the NC law was the voter ID component, then you don't have any understanding of the law and your question is flawed.
if you're just asking a general question about whether a generic vote ID law is racist i suppose it depends on the particular state and what kind of access certain communities have to get ID and other factors. but, on its face, it wouldn't seem to be.
my issue with voter ID laws is two fold. one, they are obviously not about voter fraud and are just designed to make it more difficult for certain people to vote. more importantly, they are the typical republican big government/more laws solution to something that isn't a problem. as a real conservative, the opposite of a republican, we don't need more laws and more government for things that are not a problem in this country.
as always, if you are in favor of less government and not wasting money on unnecessary things, the last party you should ever vote for is the republican party.

i think i might agree with this if it includes corporate welfare, subsidies, tax loopholes that allow you to avoid taxes and similar entitlements and government benefits.

ClubDirt is right that voter ID laws are about suppressing right to vote and rigging elections to gain political advantage. Not everyone has suitable government identification that law requires. Controversial law disproportionally discriminate against people such as the poor, young people, senior citizens, married women who change their names and visible minorities.
Most frauds are from errors by election workers such as failing to update voters list. Voter impersonation is very rare as determined by extensive investigations from President Bush's administration.

As usual 3rd do u smell what your shoveling? I've never known anyone ever that couldn't vote if they wanted too, nor have I ever heard anyone ever speak up and say so. Are their people out there (legally) without a SS #. I find that appalling that EVERYONE that works MUST have 1. How degrading is that huh 3rd? Like I said previously, if your that far out of society that your incapable of getting an id to do it, your vote isn't necessary.

I never new that GM, Intel or GE got to vote. I always thought it was a right of the citizenry... Please clear that up for me... I'll clarify for you. If any person is making a living off the federal government, be it housing assistance, food stamps, help with the electric bill, water bill, Obama phone, etc. than you don't get to vote until YOU
CAN SUPPORT YOURSELF and your family (if there's 4 or 7 kids that have no financial support other than Uncle Sam)... Why should your vote count as much as someone that paying into the system? I'm sick of the unnamed Communism that we get closer to by the day...

Since there was no income tax when this country started The Founders felt only landowners (they paid
property taxes) had an interest in the future of the country, while
those who didn't have land had no interest in the country's future...
“When the people find that they can vote themselves money,
that will herald the end of the republic.”

those companies get to do better than vote, they get to buy the politicians the rest of us vote for, and then their executives get the benefit of all the best welfare. they don't spend those enormous sums of money for nothing, after all.
anyway, if it's a plutocracy you want, we really aren't that far from it now. i'm not sure your plan to take us further down that road is going to work, but good luck with it.

Thomas Jefferson said"A Democracy will work until the citizen realizes he can Increase the size of his Purse with his Vote" He really supported a Limited Monarchy.
In most states,Entitlement programs require that a photo ID is issued without cost.......So if you're getting the goods, you've already got a photo ID.How is that Racist? Problem Solved, except if you're really concerned with the non-citizen vote or the Zombie vote.(who strangely seem to vote alphabetically)
