Two pronged play here as I like Spaun to do well this year. He had a promising season in 2017 and has moved himself up to 116 in the OWGR (official world golf rankings). He's 27 and seems primed to take another step forward this year. Byrd on the other hand is a 39 year old rookie who just got his PGA card. Spaun beat Byrd in round 1 by a stroke (-3 to -2). However, Spaun drove it farther, hit more fairways. hit more greens, had five bridies to just two bogies and lost about two strokes to Byrd on the putting greens. Byrd putted well, scrambled when needed to and shot a solid -2 opening round. With the cut at -1, I would think the rookie will be thinking more about trying to make the cut than to shoot a low score. The price is steep but I think Spaun gets it done here.
