The Players Championship Matchups
Daniel Berger (-121) over Henrik Stenson - 2U
- Riding with current form over course history here, as Berger is playing great golf coming into this week going 9th-5th-4th in his last 3 starts. Stenson has a win here back in 2009 and a 5th in 2013, but hadn't played in a month before a missed cut at Bay Hill last week. Stenson missed the cut at TPC Sawgrass last year as well, so backing Berger to keep it rolling with another strong finish.
Abraham Ancer (-127) over Shane Lowry - 1.5U
- Ancer has been about as steady as any player on Tour in the last year and a half and almost always plays the weekend. His first appearance at Sawgrass last year resulted in a 12th place finish, where he had an average true strokes gained of +2.73 over the 4 rounds. Outside of a 16th in 2016, Lowry has 3 MC's and a 46th in his 4 other starts at the Players. I believe Abe is favored for a reason here.
Matt Kucher (+100) over Paul Casey - 1U
- Similar current for these two coming in this week, but a solid edge to Kucher in past performance at Sawgrass. Kuch has a win back in 2012 and a 3rd in 2016 and has an average true strokes gained of +1.66 over 50 rounds. Casey's last 6 starts here have gone MC-MC-WD-23-22-MC and has only averaged +0.39 true strokes gained over 29 rounds.
Sergio Garcia (-108) over Louis Oosthuizen - 1U
- Louis was hot at the start of January, but then took 3 weeks off and has gone 51-MC in his last 2 starts. Sergio has been pretty consistent, going 8-23-6-37-37 in his last 5 starts. His track record at Sawgrass is quite impressive, having made 11 straight cuts and sporting an average true strokes gained of +1.85 in a huge sample size of 76 rounds. Louis finished 2nd here out of nowhere in 2017, but has only 1 top 20 outside of that and 4 missed cuts in 9 starts.
Matthew Fitzpatrick (-129) over Jason Day - 0.5U
- Small play going against Day with his back injury. I would be surprised if he ends up teeing it up on Thursday, but a chance for a repeat of last week where he does start and withdraws before completing, giving his opponent in the match a win.
