I came across an interesting article on Golf Digest for the 2020 Masters about what your average Masters champion looks like. Meaning what the average age, accolades, Masters appearances, and scores does every Masters winner have. The player Golf Digest predicted to win last year wasn't a winner but it was an interesting handicapping system so I thought I would put it to the test for this years field (the top 20 favorites).
I didn't use all the benchmark metrics Golf Digest used since it would have taken A LONG time to sift through and my Excel skills aren't spectacular. Also, since I didn't aggregate the averages data myself I don't know the standard deviations so I decided to give Age +/-4 years, Masters appearances +/-3, and Tour wins +/-3.
As for the other benchmarks related to scores, anything exactly matching or lower than the average will be considered. The scores data I used is from the 2021 PGA Tour Season. I did not include any scores where a player was cut. Here are the average benchmark metrics I used:
Average Age (+/-4) - 32
Average Masters Appearances (+/-3) - 8
Average 1st Round Score - 69.92
Average 2nd Round Score - 69.78
Average 3rd Round Score - 70.11
Average 4th Round Score - 69.72
Average 72-hole score - 279.53
Average Total Tour wins (+/-3) - 17
No player met all 8, two players met 7, and only 4 out of the 20 players met 6 of the above criteria and they are as follows:
1. Brooks Koepka*(7/8) +2500
2. Webb Simpson (7/8) +3500
3. Justin Thomas (6/8) +1200
4. Patrick Cantlay (6/8) +2200
5. Daniel Berger (6/8) +3500
6. Tony Finau (6/8) +3500
*I have put an asterisk by Koepka because he only played 6 full tournaments in the 2021 season and is coming off a surgery and hasn't competed in 2 months.
