Jason Day captured his first Major at the PGA Championship last week as he pulled away from the field on the back nine Sunday in a very emotional victory. The PGA Tour now heads to Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina for the Wyndham Championship, the final event before the FedEx Playoffs begin next week. This is a big tournament for many players as this is the final chance for many standing on the outside of the top 125 to make it into playoffs.
Sedgefield, a 7,127-yard, par 70 is the lone remaining regular Donald Ross stop on tour and you will be seeing a lot of pin hunting this week for those players trying to make a move up in the standings. It is night and day compared to Whistling Straits as it is shorter and will certainly have a lot less wind. The most important aspect this week is hitting fairways so while GIR is important, the first shot is the key. Sedgefield ranked as the easiest par 70 on tour last year.
Coming off the final Major of the season and with the playoffs starting next week, the field is not a very strong one. Only eight of the top 30 in the World Rankings are teeing it up this week, led by 12th ranked Adam Scott. Numerous storylines are in play this week including Tiger Woods making his final push to get into the playoffs. He is now ranked 187 in the standings and history is not on his side as no one in the past five years has come to Greensboro outside No. 135 on the points list and left with a playoff berth.
The favorite this week is Brooks Koepka at +1,400 as he continues to play some of the most consistent golf on tour. He is followed by Brandt Snedeker and Hideki Matsuyama at +1,500 and Adam Scott at +2,000. Six other players are listed under +3,000 - Branden Grace (+2,050), Justin Thomas (+2,300), Webb Simpson (+2,400), Billy Horschel (+2,650), Bill Haas (+2,800) and Martin Kaymer (+2,800). Woods is a longshot this week at +5,500 while defending champion Camilo Villegas checks in at +9,500.
