HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - He came to Hawaii for football, but he's leaving with an arrest record. University of Nevada's Andre Davis arrived for Thursday's Hawaii Bowl, but is now expected to fly home after posting bail in a shoplifting case. Hawaii News Now talked to him upon his release from custody Wednesday. The Wolf Pack's athletics director says this behavior is not representative of the beliefs and ideals of the Nevada football program or the university. The head coach immediately kicked Davis off the squad and suspended another player. Representatives of a bail bonds company arrived at the Circuit Court cellblock to get Nevada football player Andre Davis released from custody. Davis later emerged, carrying his shoes and other personal items in a plastic bag. Police arrested the 20-year-old reserve linebacker on suspicion of felony theft after he allegedly stole more than $1,100 worth of merchandise from the Duty Free shop in Waikiki Monday. "I apologize to my teammates. I apologize to my family. That's it," Davis told Hawaii News Now. Investigators say Davis grabbed a Cartier wallet, a Coach wallet, an Armani watch and Christian Dior sunglasses. "He doesn't come from a very wealthy family," Paul Cunney, defense attorney, said. "Maybe, I guess, he was thinking maybe he could surprise his family with some presents or something." Cunney says Davis does not plan to fight the charges and, with no prior criminal record, will likely seek a deferral. "Which means he can keep his record clear, no conviction, and he can move on with his life," Cunney said. "But he's lost his scholarship. He's lost his ability to play football." The Wolf Pack will square off against the Mustangs of Southern Methodist University without Davis and another player. We're told teammate Duke Williams had Christian Dior sunglasses with him at his hotel. He was not charged with a crime, but was put on a flight home. "I want to apologize to the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, the people of Hawaii and our fans for their conduct," Chris Ault, Nevada head coach, said. "It's sad because you prepare for bowl games and it has an effect on the other members of the team and the coaching staff." |
