take a look at the padres to win the west. it's pretty much a 3 horse race with sf and la. bonds being out even if it's for half the season, hurts the giants' chances. i know they picked up alou, but i'll take the head start with bonds out. i'm just not impressed at all by the dodgers. padres are fielding a very strong team and in this mediocre division, at +180 i've already put some down and will most likely pound it some more.

many padre players had an off year last year. it was their first season in their new park in which it takes time to get adjusted to its dimensions. many players spent a portion of last year complaining about the vastness of the park and how fly outs to the warning track would have been homers in other parks. this year they are dedicated to small ball (addition of roberts doesn't hurt here) which will help them instead of waiting for someone to hit the long ball. whether it was a lack of skill or bad luck, they stranded numberous runners which is an issue they have addressed this offseason. another season under their belts will only help x nady and khalil greene. phil nevin and ryan klesko did not produce the way they were expected to have. they may not have made any huge marked improvements by picking up big name free agents. however, the rest of the division has gotten markedly worse. the giants are without their juiced up heart and soul. they did add alou, but there is no way they will be better without the 5.000 ops baserunner each game. the dodgers have made questionable moves and although depodesta managed to get his team into the postseason after a previous series of questionable moves ala paul lo duca and guillermo mota. brad penny is still injured and they have lost adrian beltre, steve finley and shawn green. i'm not saying the padres are a lock to win the division, but at worst i see this division as being wide open and all in all, +180 is a great price as i see the padres as actually being the favorite to take this division. i have seen the padres at - money at some books.
