In the wake of the betting scandal that has resulted in former Bulldogs prop Ryan Tandy being charged by police, players were asked if they knew of an NRL player who had bet on a game, which is strictly against NRL rules. Nineteen per cent said they did.
One said: ''It happens. Not every week and every game by any means, but it happens. Players are like anyone - they are always looking to make an easy buck."
The respondent said he knew of a player who backed a Cowboys penalty goal to be the first scoring play in the Cowboys-Bulldogs game because he had heard something might be happening.
But i thought it doesnt happen? I thought its squeeky clean?

Many of the Dragons players were caught betting on their own game vs the NZW, not sure of the exact year, probably about 10 years ago.
Case was swept under the carpet and the and the penalties were VERY light. I was amazed at the time with the punishment.
All the cases since-where people have been caught (Many where I believe they havn't). Have followed similar light punishments.
Its time they get in the real world and face the same criminal charges as the rest of the nations population. They should not be given special treatment. Imprisonment, life bans and hefty fines.

When on holiday in NZ visiting family and friends some years ago, I'd often encounter Monty Betham, Nigel Vagina and a few others having a punt 'against themselves' at the Onehunga TAB. Last year on vacation I ran into Warriors half Brett Seymour on three occasions, everytime he was absolutely shitfaced at the Alexandra Park TAB in Greenlane punting away on the Monday night league game.
Fuckers are absolutely human and if stand-up citizens like us here a the 'Rugby Forum' can't resist gamblings Siren-esque calls, how the fuck can they as alcoholic, public urinating, bestiality practicing, bi-polar suffering NRL athletes.
What's the most scary thing about the NRL right now is the huge sponsorship deals with sportsbooks. Absolute farce right there and should never have been permitted...

Agreed, the thing i dont get is though, the NRL and clubs have a number of sposnorships and agreements with bookmakers yet there is no "compliance / investigating body" that will look into things like this.
Does the NRL really think EVERYONE is as stupid as Tandy and co, ie, betting a large amount on a very low liquidity option like first points option? No chance. The majority of bets by players are on high liquidity / volume option, Head to head, line, margins, overs unders etc etc. Making it much much harder to detect.
You see odds being shown and shoved down your throat everywhere, you dont think players, friends and family dont want to make a quick buck on the side?
Guarantee they make a couple of G's every weekend. The bookmakers dont mind especially if they are betting against the public to which the book is gonna make money and trick everyone in the process.
Its rife, happens every game, every week that a player, family member of friend will bet on behalf of the player or the player telling them what to bet.
I have no doubt in my mind referees bet as well.
Tandy was the most obvious case known to man kind and they are plain flat out trying to prove it, yet imagine trying to detect behaviour on the traditional high volume markets...Good luck.

Collingwood did the same thing in the AFL recently but a few of them were smart enough to not get caught doing it themselves apart from Shaw, but if you listen to uncle Tony speak in the media you know they are as close to down syndrome as you can get.
Still surprised the AFL let those guys off pretty leniently..it's nothing do with hatred toward the club but it's totally unfair to the general public who actually bet on the sport. I placed a couple bets myself on a player to kick the 1st goal in last years grand final and knowing that they talked about the odds and obviously decided on trying to make some cash for themselves just pisses you off The NRL should be applauded the way they have got the police involved and really putting these players on notice to even potential fraud and criminal sentencing. AFL should take a look at the NRL and copy because if Collingwood have been found here then you can be pretty sure they have repeated in the past. Also put's questions marks on clubs who do the wrong thing, I mean if they are willing to gain financial advantge by gambling then those people that worry about them going to Arizona for performance enhancing doping could be very valid as the richest club in Australia could easily find new technology to eliminate any detection and of all places..Arizona a hot spot for cyclists, NFL and olympic athletes.

Great post highlighted by your last point - something I brought up 1-2 years ago. I chalk it up to different cultures because the NFL won't allow even a hint of any affiliation with any gambling.
