A RUGBY league player's frustration over a hard hit during a heated finals game flared violently when he stormed off the field and returned with a knife.
Teammates had to restrain the 26-year-old player during the Sunraysia Rugby League (SRL) semi-final in northwestern Victoria as his coach quickly disarmed him, police say.
The Chaffey Titans player is now facing a possible life ban from the sport when the SRL board meets later this week.
"We don't want people in the league carrying on like that. The thing is, he was also an unregistered player and he shouldn't have been playing anyway,'' SRL project manager Ken Kennedy told AAP.
Police say the player will also be questioned for carrying a controlled weapon.
The incident started on Saturday early in the first half of a crucial semi-final between the top-of-the-ladder Chaffey Titans and the Mildura Tigers in Nichols Point.
A hard hit against the Titans player turned into a brawl, which was broken up by the referee.
The infuriated Titans player then took off his jumper and walked to his car.
When he returned to the field he had a knife in his hand, but no-one was injured or threatened with the weapon, a police spokesman told AAP.
"His teammates were telling him, 'That's a really stupid thing to do','' he said.
The game was immediately called off 16 minutes in with the Tigers awarded the win, putting them straight into the grand final.
The Titans may now be banned from next week's preliminary final for playing an unregistered player.
Mr Kennedy said the first season of the revived SRL featuring clubs in northwestern Victoria and southern NSW had been a great success.
"We've had decent football and it's been incident free until this week,'' Mr Kennedy said.
"But we have to look at the positives in that we have hundreds of registrations and a big interest in the sport.''
