And then there were four, and the only reason I know that is because this is one of the only leagues still pumping our degenerate souls with an IV. Not sure why or how they are doing it, but to each their own and let the games continue, assuming nobody gets hurt or gravely ill.
Shakityor Soligorsk vs. Dinamo Brest
Last year, in the Premier League, Dinamo Brest was 25-5-1 (w-d-l) outscoring opponents 70-22, an average of 2.05 to 0.64 per match. Regardless of what league this is, that is impressive. Their only other blemish than the one loss in PL was a loss in the quarterfinals of the Belarusian Cup last season. Most teams say they play to win, but Brest had a Champions League qualification in its sight, and they were basically a lock for at least a Europa spot (top spot in PL get CL spot and 2nd and 3rd get Europa). So, maybe they didn't put all their energy into the Cup, but what's important to note is they lost to Shakityor, their opponent today, on penalty kicks. This season, Brest has started off 2-1-3 (w-d-l) and already have 3x as many losses as they did last year in the PL campaign. They currently sit 14th in the table and while the season is young, the Cup is an opportunity for them to qualify at least for Europa. Most will chalk up their struggles this season to them just being not as good, and while they did lose a ton of players in the offseason transfer market, they also gained a bunch. I think their issue right now is team chemistry, which will take time, but for those members that played last year in the Cup and lost on PKs, there must be some focus on revenge. Add to that, their current position might be too much of a challenge to qualify through the PL, so winning the Cup should be their primary focus right now. They currently have a lead 2-0 on aggregate, so they don't need to win to advance, a 1-0 loss will get them through, but I think there is too much pride with this team to just park the bus and play for a 1-0 loss or draw. Shakityor has no choice but to come out with their foot on the gas, they need at least 2 goals and a clean sheet to push this to extra time - a goal by Brest and this one is likely in the books.
