This var crap really sucking the life out of the game and my bets. Constant overturned goals when I bet over 2.5 and it all started when gambling made its way to being legal. Sucks betting soccer now

Var in soccer is a nightmare because unlike other sports many goals are literally inched offside and not offsides..it would be like using a var on balls and strikes in baseball a nightmare situation..just think of the thousands of goals scored in soccer in the past that would have been overturned

I have asked this so many times I cannot count. But I will ask it here again. Does anyone who is a big soccer rule person able to explain to me the purpose of offsides. It isn't like there are offsides calls because someone cherry picks at mid pitch waiting for a break away. To me this offsides BS rewards lazy defense. So if you are telling me you cannot sneak past a standing defender and make a motion toward the goal WTF. That is like saying that someone cannot break toward the basket but wait for the defender to get back in place before accepting the pass and shooting the ball into the basket in basketball. That is so ass backwards I don't understand the purpose of the rule. Can someone please explain it to me.

Thank you for replying. I hope someone does. I have literally asked this question a couple dozen times when a goal is called off for being offsides but no one ever has tried to answer. It is a part of the game okay but why. I don't understand the purpose of it other than to award lazy defensive play.

I scratch my head sometimes as well. I had also asked people I work with(people have kids that play and cannot ever give me a clear cut answer). To me, it isn't cut and dry like ice hockey. Ultimately for me, if the attacker is level with the defender he is onside, the attacker is off side if he is past the defender AND receives the ball. Found this, I hope it helps.

Yes you are correct that is the rule. But again my question isn't what is the rule by WHY? To me it seems like if the defender is a statute and refuses to move you run the risk of being offsides. This just awards lazy defense. If basically any sport if you have a faster quicker attacker who gets the ball because he snuck past the statue of a defender good for him. But not in soccer we call that offsides and no goal. That is wrong on many levels. Then add VAR who loves loves loves to find someone a pubic hair offsides and rule out the goal. It is maddening to me.

Also in hockey it is about people cherry picking. That is why they have lines. You can break away. You can sneak behind the defender. You just can't be past the blue line without the puck crossing on your stick first. That is a big difference with soccer. Also frankly if there wasn't offsides or icing rules people just would throw the puck to the offensive zone and chase all day without impunity. The hockey rules require engagement. Stay in the zone unless you skate or pass it out. It rules are brilliant if you ask me. Unlike soccer.

I get it man, been screwed by VAR many, many times. I don't think the rule is going anywhere unfortunately, I have no answer as to why.

Its part of the game my friend, it always has been.
To prevent the attacker from waiting for the ball at the opponents' goal. So that not every ball is shot forward aimlessly, but a tactic actually has to be found to get to the opponents' goal.
Perhaps there are more worthy reasons for offside to exist, but I'm pretty sure this is the main reason.

@Andalouse
I appreciate the answer. But what stops a lazy defender from being a statute and putting his hands up when the attacker carries the ball past him? I literally seen offsides calls where I am like WTF is that attacker supposed to do. Just wait for the defender to get into a defensive position?

VAR has ruined soccer from a betting standpoint and also for the fans. Tons of goals are being disallowed because the player's toe or pinky is offside. The current offside rule is ridiculous to begin with and needs to be completely overhauled.

Can't agree more. I think what Analouse says makes sense about requiring a tactical attack. I have never seen someone hang around mid pitch looking to cherry pick anyway but point is well taken. But good god though there has to be a happy medium here.

Imo,once you get inside the line(18 yard line l believe)there should be no offsides.Like someone said, in basketball you can't wait for a pass near the basket until someone is near you lol...

Var is crap! They should only use goal line technology and get rid of var. there’s the same or more mistakes with var than without it! I absolutely hate Var!!
