I guess it all depends on your risk tolerance. On the conservative side I've heard that you should not risk more than 1% of your total bank on any one wager, and no more than 10% on any day. I personally break this rule all the time, sometimes wagering half my bank in one day. I know this is not a good idea, but I hate to miss the action when I believe in the wager, AND I won't be choking any horses with my bankroll. I like the rule of thumb you mentioned. I was following something along the lines to what Snappa posted. I would not risk more than 2.5% of your total bank on any one wager, and no more than 10% on any day. After I was up about 25%, I lowered the single wager to 2%.
You are risking a similar dollar amount but I think this helps you to preserve what you have already won.
