First of all, a surround system can be as cheap or spendy as you want to make it. I now have over $6K into mine & have a coworker who has over $20k into his. If you want to go cheap you can get a decent Home Theatre in a Box (HTIB) for around $500. But if you were willing to spring for a Sony Bravia I would think you'd want to get something more than a HTIB.
Let's start by eliminating anything to do with Bose. Despite what you may read, they have some of the worst performing & most overpriced junk out there. A good, inexpensive starter HT would be
this. Best Buy has a few good combos that you could live with for a while yet still upgrade the components one by one when you feel you want to.
I would say that, for a home theatre, a good subwoofer is paramount. It can make up for shortcomings in your speakers & receiver power. You can get a pretty good sub in the $400 range if you look around...........Paradigm, Velodyne, M&K, Klipsch, Axiom (an online-only Co.) all make various sized & priced sub's that are quality units. SVS & Hsu are online Co.'s that also make a great product.
Klipsch also makes a good speaker for HT. Most of their speakers have horn mid's & tweeters which make them a bit forward...........good for HT. There are hundreds of brands of speaker out there............go take a listen.
5.1 is good for now & you can get a lot of 5.1 receivers pretty cheap these days, although it looks as though 7.1 still gets pushed...........even though there's next to nothing in the way of movies that's produced in 7.1. However, to get TrueHD sound (Blu-ray) you'll most likely have to spend a bit more &it will be 7.1. I've had good luck with Yamaha & Denon. Pioneer (Elite), Harmon Kardon, Onkyo & Marantz also make very good units. Sony not so much. Their forte is TV. Most of what you'll see is 100wpc units...........fine. That'll do. But if you run across a 90w or even 80w unit for a good price, it'll work. Most receivers' power is overrated but I won't go into that. Suffice to say that most are pretty close in that range. The more power you want, the more you'll pay. It's not uncommon to find units in the $5K range. But for a good unit that will support the new DD sound fields you should expect to pay at least $700-$1000, maybe a bit less on sale.
Hope this helps
