I just bought a sony ericsson k790a (upgraded from the SE k750i) and found my provider (rogers) has blocked me from using MP3's as ringtones because they want their users to download and use their ringtones(i guess).
I've been searching the net and found many people were having the same problem, and some have said debranding the phone is the way to go, and other have said just convert my mp3's to DRM and copy them to my phone.
I'm probably just going to try converting them to DRM first, but I'm kinda thinking about debranding my phone because apparently it unleashes the full potential of my phone.
Have any of you tried debranding? Is it worth it and was it that hard to do?

Depends on the phone, sometimes there are software hacks and then sometimes it's the dreaded hardware hacks. Hope you are good with a solder and an iron.

I've already bought some credits for this site, I just need to download the software and giver a go. I'm just a bit nervous as I haven't really ever heard of de-branding a phone until yesterday.
Haven't used a soldering iron since shop class in grade 7. No way I could attempt a hardware flash.

I don't know much about debranding a cell phone but a buddy of mine is thinking about doing the same thing. I was flipping through some papers that he had printed off the site and it looks like there is a good possibility of doing irreversable harm to you phone if you screw up the process. Sounds like you got yourself a nice Sony phone, don't f**k it up!!!!

Risky, I finally unlocked my phone last night and it's working better than ever now! No more of that Rogers bullshit.. I've got my own mp3 ringtones for days and I even have a bunch of new games that came with the new firmware, and more.
I'd definetly recommend un-branding your phone with the wotenserver app if you currently have a branded phone. I'm still finding new features that I didn't have before.
