My computer is slow and the CPU usage is very, very high which slows my system down considerably. The speed test is 2.95 and .65, both ok. I've done virus scans and malware scans but nothing was found. Operating system is XP with 2 gig RAM, BIOS is at the highest level, F.45, all windows updates are current.
My system is a Compaq Presario R3000 Pentium 4 3000Mhz.
I've taken the cover off that protects the cooling fans and blew out all the dust and both fans work (I've been doing this for 4 years). I've googled 'high CPU usage' but nothing really stuck out. Have you come across this type of problem?

I use AVG, malwarebytes, and super anti virus. How do I know which applications to close? If something is not a SYSTEM, Local Service, or network service is it OK to close it?

hmm, hard to say what the problem is without looking at the computer, I wouldnt close anything just yet, your best bet is to take it to geek squad or something similar

There are processes that start up with your computer that you do not need at all. Shit like Windows Messager Live or whatever.
You can turn these of by going to start>run> and type msconfig in the box. Click the startup tab and look at those things that are listed. You can see what folders they are in etc. If you don't recognize them, you prob shouldn't be turning them off. Turn off the ones you clearly do not need to save some of your systemidleprocess.
Also, go to start, accessories, systems tools, disk degragmenter. This will clean up the files on your system and hopefully allocate more memory for you.
Have you restarted recently? This can clear up your cache and stored temporary internet files. (e.x if you look at a lot of facebook photos, they are temporarily stored each time it is loaded so you can reload it quicker)
Lastly you said it just started happening today. Save the new files you have made within the last few days onto a jump drive and do a system restore. This will essentially move your computer to a few days ago (Whenever the last restore point was made by the system).
A variation of these things should work. Atleast I hope

I turned them all off right now, @ 31 in total. I have no idea what most of them were but I'll turn a couple back on every day to see which one(s) is my headache. Right now its lightning fast again and the highest I hit was 5%.

I would've checked what's running and causing the high CPU usage first using the process tab in task manager.
If you don't know what any of the processes you shut off in msconfig, you can Google the name of the process and you'll see the description and at least have an idea of what each thing is and what to leave on and off.
