Lipps,

If you do ever see a good deal on a ram upgrade for a Dell XPS M140, let me know.  I currently have 1GB but would like to move up to 2.

BTW, I just upgraded my old Emachines from 512 to 1G today, what a rip off.  It can only use .93G.  Is this normal or is there a way I can set it to fully utilize the entire 1G.

Your E-machine is using shared memory for the video card.  Your video card is built in the motherboard and is taking some of your system memory to run it.
 
I'm surprised it's not usuing more actually. You should be able to go into the bios and change the amoumt that the video card uses.  But I wouldn't put it any lower than it already is

If it's an  Acer Aspire 3690 Laptop, you would need PC2-5300 memory, even though you could also use PC2-4200 memory.  But stick with the faster memory. 

The max memory you can use is 2 Gig.  You only have two slots so there is not a great deal you can do.  I would just put a 1 gig chip in there.  That would be more than enough.  Now if you already have a PC2-4200 chip in there, getting the 5300 memory isn't going to do you any good.  It will default to 4200 speed.
