So my wife is really into digital photography and is quite good, however she just got a new computer and has no real photo editing program.
I want to get her one for xmas, but was looking at things like photoshop which can run up to $800?!?!? My question is: if she is just looking to do some cropping, maybe sharpening, color to b/w and perhaps some interesting effect filters, is photoshop the best program? Also, do I really need to go for the most expensive version?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Photoshope is the defacto standard. Therer are other programs out there, but with what you said about her skill level, she really needs a top of the line program. Check out E-bay for it. You can get maybe a version behind for just a couple hundred dollars
Photoshop has just tons of filters built in and many more you can purchase made by 3rd parties. Usually they have hundreds of different effects that come with them

Thanks Lippsman... i was looking at a program called Lightroom that i was told is good as well and only $300... the reason I might go that route is because she isn't really into the graphic design aspect of photoshop as much as just the photographioc side...

I have done some work on it and IMO it doesn't compare at all.
Really Lippsman? I mean, I totally trust your opinion and I want to put thought into this as the wife and I have agreed on 1 gift from each of us to the other since we just bought a house a few months back and have 2 kids. I actually went and played a bit with Lightroom and Elements at a MicroWorld and they seemed pretty good, although Lightroom was more advanced.... I was prompted to check those two out after researching a bit online and seeing a comparison site. Keep in mind, she doesn't ever add trext, merge photos or do any dramatic burn ins or shadowing, But I would like a professional looking editor. When you are saying that it doesn't compare are you talking about functionality, end product, or both? What I am most concerned with is the fact that she blows a lot of these photos up for home decorations and photo contests and I don't want edits to be obvious. I was impressed with Elements, but Lightroom was really impressive to me. Again, I have done some graphic design work in the past and really liked Photoshop, but that was mostly creating one sheet cupon flyers for mass-mailings and 1/2 page ads for a business... as far as strictly photo editing, I am not really in the know...
Thanks again for all advice!

I'm speaking mainly of the different functions. Lightroom is a good general to upper user program. But I just believe that for what she is doing, considering she will be using it for photo contest that would really put me over the top for getting Photoshop. I really think you can get a good deal for one on Ebay. You wouldn't have to get the latest and greatest version. Just get the last or even two versions back to save some serious cash.

I work with this kind of stuff on a daily basis, and I wouldn't go any way other than Photoshop. Adobe has CS4 out now for all their Creative Suite programs, but even something as far back as Photoshop CS2 will do you just fine. And like Lipps said, you can find CS2 for a fairly cheap price. I'm not big on Lightroom.
