Got an issue tonight. The signal keeps getting disconnected.

I have a DSL connection, Lynksys BEFW11S4 ver 4 wireless B router. The icon on the taskbar says I have an excellent connection (strength 11 Mbps wireless). If I disconnect the router and connect the ethernet cable from the modem directly to the laptop I get 100Mbps. I did all the normal shit - turn everything off and I even took the covers off the modem and router and blew them out with my air mattress pump - worked very well.
I went to the Linksys site and downloaded the easy advisor setup and performed the setup w/o issues but I still get disconnected sometimes.
Any help would be appreciated if I'm overlooking anything.
    Thanks

Oh wait........I'm still in my beta waves........Just woke up.

You will have a much faster connection with wired than you will with wireless.  Only connecting at 11Mbps means you are connecting with a B starndard. Which is what your router is.  If you want a faster connection you have to get a better router. You can get G or N routers if you want a faster wireless signal.

Now your wireless card in your receiving computer has to have a G or N card also in it.

But here's the dirtly little secret that the hardware vendors don't want you to know.  It doesn't really make any difference if you have a 11Mbps or 100 Mbps connection when you are crusing the internet.  The speed is going to be almost the same using a cable modem or DSL anyway!!!!!   The only speed difference you are going to see is if you are connected to your internal network.......

Shhhhh.......I think the Cisco/Linksys goons are at my front door now..........

Why would I constantly keep losing the wireless signal (3-4 times per hour)? I am about 20 feet away from the router when I watch games and cruise covers. Should I just upgrade the router?

If you do wireless much at all you should upgrade it.  Don't fall for all of the hype and hub-hub of the N routers.  Unless you have a huge house it won't make any difference at all. Just save your cash and get a G router.  Cisco/Linksys, Netgear, D-link are all fine.  Stay away from the Belkin stuff.  Also Buffalo is good, just kind of hard to find off the shelf.  Just get what's cheapest from the big name brands.

Also it could be your wirless card in your computer.  Do you have  trouble dropping signal when you are linked with any other wireless routers?

Do you know what kind of wireless card you have.  B or G?

For less than $100 you can get a wireless G reciever and router. If you go this route, just make sure you get matching hardware.  Same brand and type.

I somtimes wonder if the quality of my cable connection isnt up to the technology of the router and modem..meaning I connect with this dinosaur cable into the wall and it runs to the box, same setup for the past "X" years, no improvements.

How good can the quality of the signal be coming from this type of connection, copper cable into the wall? I think the cable companies need to upgrade their house to box setups.

I have the same problem and have a G router..and I get the feeling that no matter how good of a router you have, it will never be able to meet the potential which the router says because of the low end delivery to the house from the cable company.
