I know he has a history of playing lackadaisical in opening rounds, especially on surface transitions, but his last few outtings haven’t looked that way. His matches against Machac, Gahkov and Van Ashe, he looked like he was trying to play sharp. He had real problems taking control of the matches.
His early ousting of Monte Carlos is a bit of a concern. It’s not like thats a low level tournament he was at for an appearance. He doesn’t have the court coverage he used to have and I think that’s the problem. Lost a step in his stride. He does have a nagging leg injury but all the more reason to fade.
He also looks like he’s being caught flat footed, like his ability to read his opponents doesn’t have the keen instinct it used to either.
Djokovic is still Djokovic but at his age and while he’s aging, it’s going to be a quick decline when it happens. I’m not sure if it’s now but I see some early signs. Playing the Game Spread on the dogs might be the way to go in his up coming clay season. He’s yet to cover a -5.5 game spread on clay. He’s usually -4.5 or -5.5. Buying a game on the 4.5 spread might be something to consider.
Any other thoughts from folks?
