I’ve had a good year, but struggling lately and this is a MAX chase play, so feel free to fade (although idk if there’s a bet that’s everything except Nadal in straight sets). I got it at +140.
I’m not going to do a long write up because I know the size of the bet is motivated by desperation. Nadal won in straights last year vs thiem at the French open final, but thiem seems better. He beat Nadal in straight sets (best of 3 in the build up). So this bet isn’t a lock, but I think Nadal cherishes these moments. Of all the stars, I feel Nadal takes his greatness least for granted (if you watch his interviews, he’ll heap effusive praise on the world #26 he’s playing in his next match as an unbelievable threat. I guess some would say that as a self-defense mechanism in case they collapse, but he always strikes me as genuine.)
Statistically (I limit it to this because I’m not a tennis historian) no one has ever been better on any surface than he is on clay. He knows this. He relishes this. Thiem is the next great on clay. Tomorrow he aims first to win, but second (and I think he’s good enough that this matters) to leave no doubt.
It’s not smart to find yourself in a chase that’s so steep losing will likely necessitate a substantial cooling off period, so maybe I’m thinking too emotionally, but I truly like this spot.
