Like peanut butter and jelly, not many things go together quite like the weather and British Open odds.

It’s an angle golf bettors need to factor in when making their wagers, so let's dive into how the expected conditions will impact British Open picks at Royal Troon in Scotland this week.

2024 Open Championship weather conditions

It would be rare for a British Open not to be impacted by weather, particularly by wind and rain, and this year will be no different.

While the forecast at Royal Troon this week isn’t calling for the worst conditions, it won’t be all sunshine and roses either. Learn more about how weather affects your British Open bets below.

How does the weather affect 2024 Open Championship betting?

Royal Troon lies on Scotland’s west coast, set along the dunes and overlooking the sea, which means wind is pretty much a given here. Golfers will have to club up or down accordingly depending on the hole and direction of the wind.

Even though the majority of the opening nine is along the coast, the wind is generally at the back of the golfers. The scoring needs to be done before a treacherous back nine comes in, presenting some interesting live betting opportunities throughout the week.

Guys who can flush their irons tend to be the best when it comes to handling windy conditions, so consider players who are great ball strikers, particularly second-shot makers when making your British Open wagers.

Additionally, Golfers with lower launch angles should have an edge in the tourney. Mastering that wind, particularly early in rounds, will be a key to success this weekend.

Rain Rain Go Away

What’s some wind without some rain? Well, they usually go hand-in-hand at the British Open. We saw that last year at Royal Liverpool when Brian Harman lapped the field on the way to his first major championship, and we could get some more wet conditions at Royal Troon in 2024.

Playing golf in the rain is never fun, but those who can make quick decisions and shoot with conviction will have a leg up here.

Some of those players who come to mind include Rory McIlroy (+850), Xander Schauffele (+1,100), Colin Morikawa (+1,600), Shane Lowry (+4,000), Tony Finau (+4,500), and Corey Conners (+6,000) — three of whom are already Open Championship winners.

He began at Covers as a news editor and has now done everything under the sun when it comes to content. His work has been seen on TSN, Sportsnet, VSiN, and CBS.

These days Andrew’s betting expertise is focused on his favorite teams – the Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Raptors. He’s also an avid college football fan and bettor. He can’t be friends with you if you don’t appreciate a Service Academy Under. You can also call him Covers’ Sixth Man, as he regularly steps up to guest host Before You Bet and our MLB and NCAAF release shows.

The sportsbook where he does the bulk of his betting is bet365 thanks to its numerous prop betting options and competitive odds. His best advice? Find the balance between the numbers and what you see on the playing field. Then find the best price using multiple books. And don’t ask him where the nickname Taco comes from. It’s not an interesting story. Seriously.
