Belmont Stakes Odds and Post Positions: Sierra Leone Favored, Draws Post Nine

The Belmont Stakes attracted 10 of the top three-year-olds in racing, including Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan and Preakness winner Seize the Grey. But they're both looking up at Sierra Leone on the Belmont odds board ahead of the Saturday, June 8 event.

The 2024 Belmont Stakes post-position draw was conducted on Monday afternoon, where the field and Belmont Stakes odds were revealed.

Despite the presence of 2024 Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan and Preakness Stakes winner Seize the Grey, it's Sierra Leone who's the 9-5 morning-line favorite for "The Test of the Champion." In fact, neither Mystik Dan nor Seize the Grey is even the second choice in the betting.

Let's take a closer look at the odds, post positions, and field ahead of today's "Run for the Carnations."

Belmont Stakes field

The post positions and odds for the 2024 Belmont Stakes were assigned on Monday with Sierra Leone favored at 9-5 while looking to avenge a narrow loss in the Kentucky Derby vs. Mystik Dan at Saratoga Race Course this Saturday. The race is not being held at it's traditional home of Belmont Park due to construction, and the third leg of the Triple Crown has been temporarily shortened from 1 1/2-miles to 1 1/4-miles (matching the Kentucky Derby distance) due to the configuration of Saratoga.

This will be only the 22nd time that the Derby winner and Preakness winner square off in the Belmont. The last time it happened was 2013, when Derby winner Orb was favored over Preakness winner Oxbow. Both lost to Palace Malice, who skipped the Preakness after an off-the-board effort in the Derby.

Another storyline in the Belmont Stakes field is the Todd Pletcher-trained triumvirate led by Mindframe, who is making his stakes debut in the Belmont. He's crushed the competition in two highly-rated efforts to kick off his career. Pletcher also trains Peter Pan Stakes winner Antiquarian and third-place finisher Protective. The Peter Pan is the local prep for the Belmont and the race Arcangelo won ahead of his 2023 Belmont Stakes score.

How horses qualify for the Belmont Stakes

Qualifying for the Belmont Stakes is a little different from making the grade for the previous two Triple Crown races but still requires a thoroughbred horse to be three years old and come in at a weight of 126 pounds for colts and 121 pounds for fillies.

Belmont Stakes prep races

Horses who finished Top 3 in either the Kentucky Derby or Preakness Stakes are given automatic spots in the Belmont, if they choose to run. Beyond that, every horse wishing to run must be Triple Crown nominated and pay a series of entry fees. As many as 14 horses can be in the Belmont Stakes field.

Triple Crown Horses

The Belmont Stakes is known as “The Test of the Champion” because it is the final leg of horse racing's Triple Crown, and typically the longest of the three events at 1 1/2 miles (12 furlongs). However, the 2024 season does not have a Triple Crown contender entering the Belmont, and the race will be run at 1 1/4-miles this year.

Types of Belmont Stakes horses

The Belmont Stakes is selective in which type of horses compete in one of the most historic events in North American horse racing, limiting the field to three-year-old thoroughbreds.

Thoroughbred

Thoroughbred horses are known for their long athletic builds and speed, making them ideal for racing. They’re sleeker and lighter than other breeds, which is ideal for the length of the Belmont Stakes.

Age of horses

The Belmont Stakes is limited to three-year-old horses. This age of horse is ideal for racing as they have yet to fully mature and have limited races on their resume, leaving an aura of mystery, but still post fast times and exciting finishes.
