AGA's Responsible Gaming Month Starts With Fresh Sports Betting Survey Insights

Sports franchises, sportsbooks, and states that have embraced legalized sports betting are also rolling out fresh educational initiatives in celebration of Responsible Gaming Education Month.

The American Gaming Association (AGA) has released new survey results that bode well for both legal sports betting and responsible gaming awareness. The release of the consumer survey data coincides with the start of Responsible Gaming Education Month.

This week marks a significant milestone as Kentucky introduces retail sports betting for the first time, with plans to expand to online betting sites before the month's end. In reassuring news for concerned state regulators, the AGA has recently unveiled some encouraging findings.

In a recent survey, the AGA found that 91 percent of sports bettors — and 84% of past-year gamblers — were aware of at least one responsible gaming resource. Meanwhile, at least 75% of recent gamblers think existing measures have been effective in encouraging responsible play.

Those measures include: 

  • Deposit Limits (85%)
  • Time Limits (78%)
  • Wager Limits (77%)
  • Employee Training (77%)
  • Industry Code of Conduct (75%)

“This month provides a focused opportunity for the gaming community to come together to highlight and advance our efforts,” said AGA Vice President of Strategic Communications & Responsibility Cait DeBain. “We look forward to joining with our members, regulators, leagues, media and all stakeholders to uphold our collective responsibility for responsibility.”

Play responsibly 

Sports franchises, sportsbooks, and states with legalized sports betting are also launching new education campaigns to mark Responsible Gaming Education Month. On Monday, the PGA released a new campaign in recognition of RGEM.

“A key pillar of the PGA TOUR’s sports betting strategy is responsible gaming and ensuring our fans are equipped with the appropriate resources, so they are properly prepared and educated,” said Scott Warfield, the PGA TOUR’s VP of Gaming.

MGM Resorts and BetMGM also announced they will launch a responsible gaming campaign at nine NFL stadiums, promoting their new responsible gaming program. Meanwhile, New Jersey debuted a campaign, educating bettors about the risks associated with illegal sports betting sites. 

The AGA plans on featuring four weekly themes to mark the month:

  • Empowering Customers to Play Responsibly | Sept. 1-10
  • Legal, Regulated Gaming Protects Players | Sept. 11-17
  • Building a Responsible Gaming Culture Within | Sept. 18-24
  • Advancing Responsible Gaming with Research | Sept. 25-30
