The American Gaming Association announced yesterday that it has partnered with the NBA for its responsible gambling initiative.

With legal sports betting being currently available in 30 states since PASPA was repealed in 2018, there is a need for leagues to commit to the support of sensible gambling amongst its supporters.

The NBA is taking action in partnering with the AGA to deliver specially designed programs, and have all 30 teams help educate people on responsible gambling, to help support people who chose to enjoy sports betting at both retail and online betting sites.

"Responsible gaming is an integral component of the NBA’s approach to legal sports betting," said Scott Kaufman-Ross, NBA Senior Vice President, Head of Gaming & New Business Ventures in a press release. "Working with the AGA on this initiative is an important part of our multifaceted approach to this critical topic and will provide our teams with tools to make a true impact on responsible gaming education in NBA markets across the U.S. and Canada."

The Have A Game Plan initiative has been set out to unite the leagues, clubs, and bettors in a way that supports safe gambling awareness and education. It is built on four key principles:

Set a budget and stick to it.

Keep it social — sports betting is a form of entertainment for adults.

Know the odds.

Play with legal, regulated operators.

For the AGA, by partnering with giants such as the NBA, they can reach a huge audience and look to build a culture of sensible gambling amongst fans across the United States and Canada.

The initiative will be pushed out in games with public service announcements, placing set restrictions on sports betting advertisements, providing platforms for fans to engage with sports wagering from the league itself, as well as offering news and analysis across different channels.

While the NBA is the latest league to join, many big names in sports have already signed up to join the initiative, including the NHL, NASCAR, MLB, and PGA Tour, plus some of the biggest sportsbooks and online casinos such as FanDuel, BetMGM, and DraftKings.
