Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City is set to begin upgrades to its casino floor next week.
The Gypsy Bar will close on Friday, Sept. 6 to make way for a reimagined gaming area. The casino floor will also see the introduction of a new high-end lounge featuring liquors from around the globe. Additionally, Borgata plans to expand its culinary offerings with a new Asian-themed restaurant.
These upgrades are the latest in a series of enhancements made over the past year. Borgata has already renovated the Long Bar, expanded its outdoor pool area, and debuted the 9,060-square-foot Overlook event space, with panoramic views of the Marina District and the Atlantic Ocean.
“We couldn’t be more excited about this project as we look ahead to this next phase of Borgata’s evolution,” commented Nik Rytterstrom, Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa president and COO. “These enhancements are not just about maintaining our position in the market, they’re about pushing the boundaries of what our guests can expect from a world-class gaming destination.”
Atlantic City casinos
Borgata has long been the top-grossing of Atlantic City's nine casinos. However, recent financial results have revealed that other players are creeping up.
Over the first eight months of 2024, Borgata’s GGR represented 26.2% of the industry total with $427.8 million, followed by Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City with $316.9 million and 19.5% market share, and Ocean Resort Casino with 14.5% and $235.6 million in GGR.
Recent challenges
Despite ongoing casino upgrades and earnings success, Borgata has faced several external challenges this year.
Last month, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement fined Borgata Casino $75,000 for a tax underpayment, marking the second such incident in the past year. Borgata attributed the error to a software glitch and has agreed to pay the fine.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that a New Jersey judge dismissed an anti-smoking lawsuit brought by Atlantic City casino workers, allowing the city’s casinos to continue permitting smoking. Atlantic City's casinos welcomed the decision, arguing that a smoking ban could negatively impact revenues and jobs. However, casino workers see the ruling as a setback in their efforts to create a healthier work environment.
