One of hip hop’s high rollers is putting some big bucks on a couple of underdogs to take home their respective league’s hardware.
In an Instagram post on Thursday, Drake shared a pair of screenshots showing $500,000 wagers placed on both the Dallas Mavericks at +175 and the Edmonton Oilers at +105 to win the Larry O’Brien Trophy and Stanley Cup, respectively.
“Dallas cause I’m a Texan, Oilers are self explanatory,” the rapper said, referencing his recent purchase of a Houston-area home and his Canadian roots.
If both bets hit, Drake is poised to take home $2.4 million, with a $1.375 million payout on the Mavericks and a $1.025 million win on the Oilers.
Frequent bettor, less frequent winner
Somewhat famously, Drake has had a spotty record when it has come to putting his weight behind squads, with the infamous “Drake Curse” often spelling disaster for whoever he’s seen rooting for or whoever his money is on. As recently as this past March, the Drake Curse struck when the Toronto native placed a major $615,000 wager on Francis Ngannou to upset Anthony Joshua in a boxing match in Saudi Arabia, only for the Cameroonian to fall by KO in the 2nd round.
Other previous instances included a $230,000 bet on Charles Leclerc at the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix, during which the star racer saw his car suffer a power unit failure, as well as an astonishing $850,000 bet on Logan Paul to beat Dillon Danis by knockout in October 2023, which saw Paul emerge victorious – but by disqualification rather than knockout.
The “Wah Gwan Delilah” star did see his luck turn in a major way back in February during the Super Bowl, however, as he won a $2.346 million payout after the Kansas City Chiefs knocked off the San Francisco 49ers 25-22.
"I can't bet against the Swifties," Drake wrote in his Instagram caption at the time.
As for the platform, Drake placed his bets on the cryptocurrency-friendly provider Stake, a site he’s been an official partner with since 2022. While the wins haven’t always been coming for Champagne Papi, there’s little doubt Stake is doing just fine given Drake’s record on these major wagers.
