Winning £20,000 is something to celebrate. But that is easier said than done for the bet365 bettor who was 10 minutes away from winning a £1 million jackpot.

With just 10 minutes left in regulation play, Man City was up 2-nil against Man United on Sunday. While it seems like a comfortable lead, experienced punters consider it the most dangerous score in football. Just one goal by the trailing team can shift the game’s momentum, putting the leading team on its heels.

But for one bettor, it was the perfect score. It was the score that was about to win £1 million in bet365’s 6 Scores Challenge. The challenge involves predicting the scores of six predetermined Premier League matches. Picking all six correctly wins a player a share of a £1 million jackpot. Picking five nets them a share of £20,000.

10 minutes from glory

"The £1 million jackpot may not have gone, but I’m sure they will still be pleased with a whopping £20,000 consolation prize."

- bet365's Steve Freeth

One player had correctly predicted five matches: Bournemouth vs. Burnley, Arsenal vs. Sheffield United, Wolverhampton vs. Newcastle, West Ham vs. Everton, and Liverpool vs. Nottingham Forest. All the player needed was for Man United vs. Man City’s score to hold for the last remaining minutes of the match. But a goal at the 80-minute mark by midfielder Phil Foden secured Man City's win – and the jackpot was spared for another week.

“The £1 million jackpot may not have gone, but I’m sure they will still be pleased with a whopping £20,000 consolation prize,” said bet365’s Steve Freeth. “This was a rough week of predictions and out of almost 300,000 entries, only 1,000 players correctly predicted three out of six scores, only 21 managed to guess four, and only this one player guessed five and was on target to take home the jackpot until the late goal from Man City’s Phil Foden.”

But the season isn’t over – and neither is bet365’s 6 Scores Challenge.
