This weekend, the World Series of Poker® (WSOP) announced in a press release that Patrik Antonius has been inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame for 2024.
Antonius earned his title following a nomination process and voting period, outperforming "Miami" John Cernuto and Isai Scheinberg. Born in Helsinki, Finland, he is one of Europe’s most successful poker players, ranking 36th all-time in career earnings, with over $22.9 million.
“In the modern era of poker, few have been as bold and fearless as Patrik Antonius,” Ty Stewart, executive director of the World Series of Poker, said in the press release. “A force both online and live, we’re thrilled to see Patrik’s high-stakes career acknowledged by legends who have added the first international player to the Poker Hall of Fame in a number of years.”
Following the announcement, Antonius was celebrated in an induction ceremony attended by his family, friends, and fans. He then delivered the ceremonial “Shuffle Up and Deal” for WSOP Event #95, titled Poker Hall of Fame Bounty No-Limit Hold’em, and the WSOP unveiled his photo at the Hall of Fame Poker Room exhibit in the Horseshoe Las Vegas casino.
Poker Hall of Fame's rich history
Established in 1979 and acquired by Caesars Entertainment in 2004, the Poker Hall of Fame includes poker’s most influential players and important contributors and traditionally elects one or two members each year. To be considered, the player must have played poker against acknowledged top competition, be at least 40 years old, and play consistently well. Non-players must have contributed to the overall growth and success of the game.
This year’s WSOP tournament broke the attendance record set by last year’s Main Event, with 10,112 registered players. The 2024 series commenced on May 28 and will conclude on Wednesday, July 17, when the Main Event's final table champion is crowned.
