WynnBET has officially launched mobile sports betting in New York, making it the seventh online bookmaker to join the fray in the Empire State.

Players in New York can now start placing bets using WynnBET by downloading the mobile app or by going to its website. The app belongs to Las Vegas-based casino operator Wynn Resorts Ltd. and is run by a subsidiary of the company, Wynn Interactive.

“WynnBET beginning operations in New York is a monumental step in the growth of our company,” Wynn Interactive President Ian Williams said in a press release.

New York marks the eighth state in which WynnBET has begun taking wagers. There are plans to launch the app in Iowa and Louisiana in the “near future” as well, the release noted.

Seven out of nine

WynnBET’s entry into New York also means there are now seven online sportsbooks taking bets in the Empire State: BetRivers, BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel, PointsBET, and WynnBET. Bally Bet and Resorts World have also been conditionally licensed in the state but have yet to go live (the chairman of Bally’s Corp. recently told CNBC that they don’t intend to launch until April).

At any rate, online bookmakers are already doing brisk business in New York. In just a few weeks of legal mobile wagering, a handful of operators have taken hundreds of millions of dollars in bets, putting the state on track to be one of the — if not the — biggest markets for sports gambling.

The online betting boom follows New York lawmakers approving mobile wagering as part of last year’s budget process. The New York State Gaming Commission then gave the nod in November to nine total online sportsbook operators.

WynnBET's slower arrival in New York follows a recent report from the New York Post that Wynn Resorts is weighing a sale of Wynn Interactive. It also comes after Wynn Resorts began suggesting in the fall that it wasn't interested in spending a ton of cash to acquire customers, as some of its rivals are doing.

“New York represents a significant population of our Wynn Rewards membership, and we are confident in our ability to compete in this market by providing the first-class service and gaming experiences synonymous with the Wynn Resorts brand,” Williams added in the release.
