Angels vs Yankees Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s MLB Game

The Yankees have been struggling, and while Kyle Hendricks may seem like a solid opponent to figure things out against, he doesn't give up a lot of hard contact. Meanwhile, the Angels measure up well against Will Warren.

The New York Yankees had been cruising until about two weeks ago, when the Red Sox came to town and won two of three in the Bronx. Since then, things haven’t been the same.

Plus, the Los Angeles Angels just shut them out in Monday's opener. My Yankees vs. Angels predictions and MLB picks expect those struggles to continue tonight.

Angels vs Yankees prediction

My Angels vs Yankees best bet: Angels first five innings moneyline (+200 at bet365)

Neither Los Angeles Angels righty Kyle Hendricks nor New York Yankees starter Will Warren has had a good season, and you could certainly make a case for the Over.

However, the Yankees' recent offensive struggles give you pause, and my projection of 9.2 runs isn't enough to justify laying it at -110, especially with such an appetizing first-five innings moneyline of +200 out there on the Angels — I made the fair price around +135.

This is a clear case of a regularly overvalued Yankees team being taxed even more in the market because they are "due." Indeed, the Yankees' recent struggles aren't indicative of their most likely season outcomes, and a return to the mean for a great offense is likely on the horizon.

But this isn't a good matchup for Warren. His reliance on his sweeper and sinker could put him in trouble, as these two offerings account for more than 40% of his pitches.

The Angels are one of the more aggressive teams against sinker-heavy righties, particularly in the top half of the order.

Warren's sinker and sweeper don't generate a high ground-ball rate nor do they induce consistent weak contact, so contact-heavy lineups like the Angels can get extended at-bats and force him into unfavorable counts.

Warren struggles to strike out right-handed hitters who can lift the ball. That's the embodiment of the Halos lineup, with players like Mike Trout and Taylor Ward helping them to the fifth-highest flyball rate in the majors.

On the other hand, it's certainly not the most comfortable option to back Hendricks, but there are some things I like.

He's a pitch-to-contact SP who rarely throws the fastball and does a great job of limiting hard contact. His offspeed pitch run value is among the sport's best (79th percentile), and he'll also throw a nice amount of sinkers.

Outside Aaron Judge and Ben Rice, the Yankees have struggled against sinkers. This is holding more true than ever with Giancarlo Stanton back in the lineup — a career .198 hitter against such pitches.

I don't expect some masterful showing from Hendricks tonight, but we'll not need it to cash this bet. This is a story of two things: The Yankees continuing to struggle against pitchers who don't have hard-hit issues and an awful matchup for Warren.

Angels first five innings moneyline

Taylor Ward Over 1.5 hits + runs + RBI

Taylor Ward’s flyball rate ranks in the Top 20%, his hard-hit rate in the Top 30%, and his sweeper/sinker-hitting abilities should all combine to give us nice value on this prop. I also like his positioning at fourth in the lineup, as it puts him directly behind some of the best hard-hitting players in the L.A. offense, thus increasing his RBI chances.

The BAT X projects him for 2.1 hits + runs + RBI.
