Blue Jays Picks, Predictions & Best Bets vs the Rangers for May 27

Nathan Eovaldi may be dealing, but Alejandro Kirk will get the best of him in tonight's matchup.

Kevin Gausman outdueled Jacob deGrom as the Toronto Blue Jays took the opener of their series with the Texas Rangers by a score of 2-1. But the Toronto bats still need to come alive if they want to find any consistency this season.

That might not be easy going against the red-hot Nathan Eovaldi, so my Blue Jays predictions go looking for offense from an unexpected source.

Today’s Blue Jays best bet: TEASER

Alejandro Kirk Over 1.0 hits (+100 at BetVictor)

The Toronto Blue Jays may have won the opener of this series against the Texas Rangers 2-1, but the game never should have been that close.

The Jays couldn’t get that clutch hit, leaving 21 runners on base, six of them in scoring position with two outs. It seems to be becoming a bit of a theme this season, and a reason why they can’t build momentum.

Rangers’ starter Nathan Eovaldi won’t make it any easier on them tonight. The veteran right hander is dealing, allowing just three earned runs over his last six starts — lowering his ERA to 1.60.

However, while it won’t be easy, Eovaldi isn’t invincible. His expected ERA is good, but not elite at 3.21, while his .239 opponent expected batting average is just in the 60th percentile among MLB pitchers.

That’s because when he’s getting hit, he’s been getting hit hard. Eovaldi ranks in the 46th percentile in average exit velocity, the 59th in hard-hit rate, and the 51st percentile in barrel rate.

So, guys with good bat-to-ball skills can be successful against the RHP, which has me looking at Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk.

Kirk is quietly having a solid season at the dish. He enters this game with a .287 batting average and is currently in the midst of a four-game hitting streak, during which his average is .444 and his OPS is 983.

The advanced numbers tell an even better story: He ranks in the 89th percentile in xBA, the 90th in hard-hit rate, and the 92nd in squared up percentage.

Kirk also has a great track record against Eovaldi. The Jays catcher is 6-for-10 with two doubles and three walks vs. the righty. Give me Captain Kirk to get a couple of knocks in tonight’s matchup.

Today’s Blue Jays same-game parlay (SGP)

Alejandro Kirk Over 1.5 hits

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Over 0.5 runs

Daulton Varsho Over 0.5 RBI

Shocker, another player with some success in his career against Eovaldi is Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who is 10-for-23 with two doubles and a home run in prior matchups.

The Blue Jays slugger is a bad matchup for Eovaldi because of his patience at the plate and his natural power. Vladdy also ranks in the 96th percentile in xBA.

All that getting on base means he’s been scoring a bunch of runs. Thirty-one to be exact, and he's crossed the plate 19 times in his last 25 games. With Kirk hitting behind him, I like him to score again tonight.

Another guy who hits behind Vladdy is Daulton Varsho, and he can’t stop driving in runs. He hit another home run yesterday, bringing his total to eight on the season, and now has 20 RBI... all in just 20 games.
