Joe Musgrove (7-7, 2.94 ERA): Musgrove is coming off one of his best starts of the year, as the 28-year-old struck out 11 batters in a seven-inning shutout against the Colorado Rockies. The righty has now given up two or fewer earned runs in five of his last eight starts, but he has had some really rough outings mixed in during that span. Also, Musgrove has been a bit worse on the road this season, sporting a 4.21 ERA in seven road appearances.
Frankie Montas (9-8, 4.08 ERA): Much like Musgrove, Montas is also coming off of a dominant performance as the righty struck out 10 over seven innings of shutout ball against the Los Angeles Angels on July 29. Montas has been one of the more reliable pitchers for the Athletics lately, as he has given up three or fewer earned runs in 10 of his last 11 starts.

Moneyline pick
Montas has really been in a nice groove lately, as the righty has struck out 10 batters in three of his last four outings. Now, the 28-year-old faces a San Diego team that is without Fernando Tatis Jr., one of the game’s most dangerous hitters. Sure, the Padres got it going offensively against Sean Manaea yesterday, but it’s a tough ask for them to do it again this afternoon.
While Musgrove has been great recently, he has been doing most of his best work against bad teams. Things won’t be as easy against an excellent Oakland squad, and this Athletics team has actually hit him rather hard in the past. The A’s have a team batting average of .275 against Musgrove, which is actually quite high.
Don’t be surprised if Matt Olson has a big game in this one: He had been ice cold before homering against the Angels on Sunday, and he has the exact type of plate presence that can give Musgrove trouble.
Overall, there isn’t a whole lot to like about the Padres coming into this game. Oakland has the better starter, a more dangerous lineup, and a solid bullpen.

The Athletics have a good chance of giving Musgrove some trouble, but it’s still not likely that the righty will give up more than four or five runs in this game.
Musgrove has only given up more than four runs in a start twice this season, and those games came in back-to-back starts against the Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals. It was a rare lousy stretch for Musgrove, who has been pretty consistent since.
Oakland should really win this game, but that’s more because of the few small edges the team has in the lineup. Montas has also been dealing lately, so it wouldn’t be shocking if he gave up only one or two runs in this game.
