Two teams in the East’s play-in section battle Sunday when the Chicago Bulls visit the Detroit Pistons.

My analysis
The Detroit Pistons got themselves back in the win column last game with a 117-102 win over the Mavericks, putting an end to a three-game losing slide. That was the first of a six-game homestand for the Pistons, who start the day in seventh place, just a half-game back of the sixth-seeded Heat.
Even with the losing skid, Detroit finished off a successful January, going 10-6. There was a noticeable improvement on defense, allowing just 109.4 points over that stretch, down a full four points from its season average.
Offensively, the Pistons are still a work in progress, with probably too much running through newly-minted all-star Cade Cunningham. They put up just 111.6 points in January, shooting 46.7% from the field and 35.6% from 3-point range.
Chicago’s offense won’t be the best version of itself either, the one that ranks seventh in the league at a 116.5 clip. Still, they can put up points, as they beat up on a streaking Raptors squad 122-106 Friday night. Backcourt mate Coby White picked up the scoring slack with 25 points, while Nikola Vucevic had 21 points and 12 boards.
That’s been one of the few bright spots for Chicago, as they crashed in the second half of the month, dropping eight of the last 11, with their defense mainly letting them down, but there’s something about playing Detroit, as the Bulls have just two losses in the last 20 meetings.
Chicago won 122-112 as a 4-point underdog in this season's lone meeting back in November.
The Bulls have covered three of the last four and are 6-3-1 ATS in the last 10. If their offense picks up where it left off in Toronto, they'll keep it close.

Cade Cunningham has been on a tear, punctuated by a 40-bomb in a win over the Mavericks. That makes it five times in the last six games he’s gone for 29+ points, which is likely why the books have his scoring line at 28.5 points, but the budding star has yet to cross that line against the Bulls in six games, averaging just 19.5 points. Against Chicago this season, Cunningham went for 26 points and added 10 assists. He’ll be close, but we’ll stay on trend until he breaks through.
He’ll be the primary shot-maker and creator Sunday and should be able to get to 21 points.
